With consumer giants like BestBuy, Walmart, Sears and dozens of others offering store bought computers at discount rates, is it worth it for me to look into a custom build?
The answer to that questions lies in the source. Before we get there though, let’s look at some numbers.
On Friday, June 30th, 2017 I looked at some major retailers of computers and got a general idea (outside of sales) for what you could expect to get for around $700.00
Here is what I saw at a local “Big Box” store.
Popular Desktop Brand
Price $699.99 + Tax
Now let’s compare that to a computer my company, Triad Nerd Herd built for a local customer.
Triad Nerd Herd Custom Build
DeepCool Mid Tower Case
MSI Mother Board
8GB DDR3 1866 speed ram
AMD FX 8300 series, 8 core processor
Radeon FX 460, 4GB Graphics Card
x2 HDMI Outputs, x1 VGA Outputs
x3 USB 3.0, x4 USB 2.0
Price $715.00 out the door
Now for my inner geek to shine! Let’s compare apples to apples and see which of these two computers would come out on top.
I5 – 6400 vs. AMD FX 8300
Going to CPU Bench Mark (Easy way to see which processor is better)
The Intel I5 clocks in at…6723
The FX 8300…7683
Chalk one up for the Nerd Herd, just under a thousand point better CPU Speed in our Build
Generic 1366 speed ram vs. G.Skill 1866 RipJaw Series
Well, do we even need this? For those of you not following my geekiness, there is no comparison. Not only will the G.skill ram outperform in every way possible, it also comes with a better warranty.
Chalk up 2 for the Nerd Herd!
Geforce GTX 730 2GB card vs. Radeon RX 460 4GB Card
One again lets head to a benchmark software. Keep in mind these numbers are taken from the same benchmark sites so as to be accurate.
GTX 730 clocks in at…an astounding…924
Radeon RX 460 4GB clock in at…a mere…4,335!!!!
That’s over 4 times the power!
I think you get the point. Nerd Herd wins again!
Here is where it gets dicey for the custom computer building industry. A lot of people do it very badly, for that matter many companies do it badly also. Here at the Nerd Herd we are concerned with things like how happy our customers are. Some places just don’t care and unless you know what you are doing, breaking all the new parts is more likely than putting them together.
So is it worth it? YES, if you are getting your computer from a reliable company.
Not only can you get more bang for your buck performance wise but generally the warranty on parts is much better!
At Triad Nerd Herd it’s very simple. You check off a list what features and performance specs you need out of your computer. We give you the price, you pay and generally less than 2 weeks later you have a brand new computer ready to go.
So, in closing, if you are in the market for a business, gaming or family desktop give Triad Nerd Herd a call and we can make sure you get the very best bang for your buck!
